Academic journey
Deobrat Kumar's working method was formed before his first job. Between 2003 and 2008 he served in the Army Wing of the National Cadet Corps, earning the A, B and C Certificates and being named Best Cadet at both the Combined Annual Training Camp and the Army Attachment Camp. Selection for the Thal Sena Camp followed. What the drill ground taught — composure under pressure, accountability, responsibility for the person standing next to you — became the organising idea of the career that followed.
He entered the corporate sector and accumulated more than thirteen years across banking, financial services and insurance and the global business process industry. The early work was high-stakes and operational: anti-money-laundering and know-your-customer due diligence, identity verification and customer risk profiling; fraud investigation and transaction monitoring, reading suspicious patterns and closing operational vulnerabilities; and end-to-end mortgage and commercial banking operations, including quality control and quality assurance inside United States mortgage underwriting frameworks. The common thread was the ability to turn a dense regulatory guideline into a usable control.
At EXL Service.com (India) Pvt. Ltd., as a Quality Compliance Analyst and Senior Associate, that ability became a specialism. He worked in quality governance, root cause analysis and calibration — identifying systemic process gaps, engineering preventive controls to stop compliance deviations recurring, and running cross-functional calibration sessions to hold operational teams to a single global standard. In 2024 the firm recognised him with its "Innovator of the Process" award for introducing automated, data-centric quality assurance.
He then set out to complete the toolkit from both ends. An Executive Development Programme in Data Analytics at the Indian Institute of Management Jammu added data visualisation, predictive modelling and strategic reporting in Power BI, Python and Excel. In parallel he studied Psychology at the Indira Gandhi National Open University, on the view that a compliance leader who understands cognitive dynamics, motivation and conflict resolution will mentor better than one who understands only the control framework.
As Managing Director of Unitech Maritime Services he now applies that combination — quality compliance, risk management, analytics and operational strategy — to enterprise operations, vendor management and organisational governance. His stated philosophy is ethical governance, operational agility and sustainable growth, held alongside a deliberate commitment to mentorship and to a life that is not consumed by the work.
