Academic journey
Jayakrishnan Sambhu joined Indian Railways in 1987 as a Junior Engineer, and left it in May 2026 as an Additional Divisional Railway Manager. The thirty-nine years in between trace a single arc: from the maintenance of equipment to the governance of a division, and from technical integrity to institutional strategy.
The middle of that career was spent in the electrical discipline — Section Engineer, Assistant Electrical Engineer, Divisional Electrical Engineer, and from 2009 to 2023 Senior Divisional Electrical Engineer — building competence in asset optimisation, risk mitigation and the supervision of large technical workforces. From 2023 to 2026 his remit widened to the whole enterprise. As Additional Divisional Railway Manager his mandate covered the integrated governance of the Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Signal and Telecommunication branches together, which is to say the alignment of separate operational verticals behind a single set of objectives: safety, financial viability, efficiency and public accountability.
The signature project of those final years was the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. As Chief Project Manager he directed the comprehensive redevelopment of sixteen stations across Southern Railway's Palakkad Division — a programme demanding large-scale budgeting and cost control, multi-tier vendor management, public-private interfaces, and compliance held to the standard that applies when the public is watching and the regulator is too.
Earlier capital work was of the same order. He directed the railway electrification of the Villupuram–Trichy and Shoranur–Mangalore sections, and the technical overhaul that retrofitted DC EMU rakes into AC-DC systems — major technological transitions executed on a network that could not stop running while they happened.
He has also spent a substantial part of his career teaching. As Principal of the Zonal Electrical Training Centre he shaped the educational framework for technical and operational personnel, and designed the specialised training syllabus for AC-DC EMU rake operations. Having retired from active service, he intends to carry that work into higher education and advisory practice — as an electrical engineering consultant, a corporate advisor and a professor of practice — translating four decades of field data and crisis management into something a management classroom can use.
