Academic journey

Wei Chen arrived in Canada as a graduate student in 1986 and has spent his career on the structural response of buildings to loading conditions outside the design envelope — earthquakes larger than the code anticipates, wind events that fall outside the historical record.

He served eight years as Dean of Engineering, a period he describes without enthusiasm and during which he nonetheless pushed through a curriculum reform requiring all engineering undergraduates to complete coursework in uncertainty and failure analysis. The reform survived his departure, which he regards as its principal validation.

He holds a higher doctorate awarded on the basis of his published work, and continues to supervise doctoral students at seventy-one.

Structural Response beyond the Design Envelope: Four Decades of Analytical and Experimental Work

Abstract

A body of published work, recognised by higher doctorate, concerning the analysis and experimental characterisation of structural response to loading conditions exceeding code design assumptions.

Problem statement

Structural design codes are calibrated against historical loading records. Events exceeding those records occur, and the response of code-compliant structures under such conditions was, at the outset of this work, poorly characterised analytically and almost entirely uncharacterised experimentally.

Research methodology

The programme combined large-scale experimental testing on a shake table facility, analytical model development for post-elastic response, and probabilistic characterisation of loading conditions in the tail of the distribution, conducted across 34 funded projects.

Major findings

The work established quantitative characterisations of failure progression in several common structural systems under beyond-envelope loading, identified a failure mode in a widely used connection detail that was subsequently addressed by code amendment, and produced probabilistic loading models now used in two national codes.

Academic contribution

The work provides the analytical and experimental basis for beyond-envelope design provisions in two national structural codes.

Impact & contribution

Chen's research contributed the analytical basis for several provisions in two national structural design codes concerning beyond-envelope loading. His broader institutional contribution is the curriculum reform, now in place for fourteen years, which made uncertainty analysis a required rather than elective component of engineering training at his institution and was subsequently adopted in modified form by six other faculties. He has supervised 41 doctoral candidates, of whom a substantial majority hold academic or senior practice positions.
